Schubert’s string quartet Der Tod und das Mädchen, one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire, should not be missed in a festival edition in which death is the leitmotiv.
Nearly seventy-year-old Leoš Janáček writes his first string quartet in nine days in a fit of love. The Kreutzersonate, after Tolstoy’s novel of the same name, is about love, jealousy and ultimately murder….a ‘crime of passion’! Four strings and an actor make Janáček’s notes and Tolstoy’s words merge.
