I will sing a frightening series of songs for you.”

With this promise Franz Schubert lured his café friends to a foretaste of his Winterreise. Just like in Die schöne Müllerin, a lonely young man goes on a hike. This time under harsh conditions, in the freezing cold.

And again, with death as a result…In the 24th song he meets the Leiermann, the musician with the hurdy-gurdy; a personification of death? The journey of the young man, who we follow 24 songs for a long time on his lonely and icy journey, is bloodcurdling, all the more so in this arrangement for baritone (André Morsch) and string quartet that has never been performed before in the Netherlands. Meanwhile, the song cycle is considered one of the most penetrating and enigmatic masterpieces in Western art. Schubert started the Winterreise the year before his own death and would not experience an official performance.

You can combine this concert with ‘Over Orpheus’, which starts at 9.30 pm in the Nieuwe Kerk after ‘Die Winterreise’.
